How to pack the perfect lunch

A school lunch box can create a large amount of waste during a year.

Consider the number of plastic sandwich wrappings and empty fruit juice containers that are tossed into school rubbish bins.

But there are many easy ways to reduce “lunchbox waste”:

  • Sandwiches: Buy a cheap, sealable plastic bag that can be washed and re-used instead of using lots of plastic wrap.
  • Drinks: Use a plastic drink bottle instead of a packaged drink that can be thrown away.
  • Fruit: Always eat fresh fruit (instead of the canned variety) because the core can be placed in a compost bin, or fed to a worm farm, and the energy from the fruit is re-used.
  • Snacks: Place jellybeans and nuts in small plastic containers rather than wrapping them separately in plastic wrap.
  • Vegemite: Buy a large jar and make your biscuits at home instead of using individually wrapped Vegemite packets.
  • Biscuits: Greaseproof paper breaks down a lot quicker than the plastic wrap will.
