Stay warm and wise this winter!

Follow these smart ways to save energy, money and reduce greenhouse gas emissions during the cold days and nights.

  • Does your family use a reverse-cycle air conditioner? During winter, please set the air-conditioner temperature as low as you comfortably can. Generally, the most efficient temperature is between 18°C and 21°C. When you raise the temperature by 1°C, you can add as much as 10 per cent to the heating costs.
  • Do not immediately turn your heater on the highest setting. For reverse-cycle air conditioners, it is more efficient to turn it on earlier at 21°C and have it slowly warm the room.
  • If possible, use ceiling fans at a low speed (or on a winter setting) to circulate warm air.
  • Make sure to close all blinds and curtains at night to retain the warmth in rooms.
  • On sunny days, open the blinds and curtains (especially those at north-facing windows) to allow warm sunlight inside rooms.
  • Install draught-stoppers to reduce the cold air coming through the cracks of doorways and windows.
  • Dress appropriately so you don't need to turn up the heater. After all, putting on a jumper costs far less than heating your house.
