What freezes first, hot water or cold water?
Materials
- Foam cup with cold water
- Foam cup with same amount of very hot tap water
- Freezer
- Clock or timer
What to Do
- Fill one foam cup with cold water and the other with the same amount of very hot tap water (be careful not to burn yourself!).
- Immediately place both cups in the freezer.
- Check the cups every 15 minutes and you will find that the hot water freezes first!
Why?
- Hot water evaporates much faster than cold water. During evaporation a lot of heat energy is lost. The hot water freezes first because its temperature drops at a faster rate than that of the cold water.
